Birds of the Tropics

These prints are a series commissioned by the Allen & Ginter Tobacco Company to be used as cigarette cards. The Richmond VA based company started issuing collectable cigarette cards in the late 1880s to promote their tobacco products. They produced cigarette cards on a variety of topics – including the world’s first Baseball Cards.

These prints are from a series called Birds of the Tropics and were originally printed by Geo. S. Harris & Sons Lithographers of Philadelphia.

These images are courtesy of the Jefferson R. Burdick Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
